Cantina Murgo Winery

The History

The Murgo winery was established in 1860. In 1981 baron Emanuele Scammaca del Murgo decided to convert the family-owned estate into a modern agricultural holding. In the following years he was supported by his children in this transformation. The baron was especially passionate about winegrowing. Today the winery is managed with a lot of devotion by Michele Scamacca del Murgo, Baron Emanueles oldest son.

The Winemakers

The Scammacca del Murgo family is one of the oldest noble families in Sicily and has always managed to combine tradition and modern spirit. This is especially noticeable in their interpretation of Sicilian wines. The Baron, who worked in foreign service for a long time, remembered the diverse history of Sicily and picked a time that he interpreted during his work at the vineyard. The time during the French rule in Sicily had always inspired him in particular, which is still represented in today’s wines. It is not coincidence that the family grows not only grows the typical Etna grapes but also creates wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and even a Brut. This work, that is always in tune with nature, is testable in every glass and is honoured with every glass.

The Wines

The main vineyard of the family Tenuta San Michele is located 500 meters above sea level on the hillsides of Mount Etna. The grapes of different wines all grow on sandy volcanic soil. The soil is characterised by a high minerality. The soil conditions with high variations in temperature lends the wines a special complexity and flavour, which differentiates these wines from other Italian but also international wines. Especially the combination of these conditions with the grapes Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon, which are untypical for Etna, result in a special flavour experience for these wines.
